“Did you see [Heinz] von Westernhagen at that time?” Dwinell knew that von

Westernhagen was the commander of Peiper’s improvised Tiger Battalion, SS

Heavy Panzer Battalion 501.

“Yes, I asked him about the situation in his battalion and about his casualties.”

Peiper paused, as if considering his words. “Among other things he told me in this

conference that a mix-up had happened at Ligneuville and that a rather large number

of prisoners had been shot there. He did not know any details, nor who had given

the order to do that.”

“Was this the first time that you heard of the incident he spoke about?”

“Yes,” Peiper said, and he had seen it himself. “He had passed by there,” he

recalled, but there were more pressing problems. “My road of advance from Trois

Ponts on west could not be maintained and I had to find another crossing

somewhere. . . . I decided to take the route by way of La Gleize to cross the

Ambleve southwest of there in order to get back to the main road.”

This was done speedily, Peiper told the court.

  Peiper’s direct testimony on June 22, 1946, told of a conversation with his Tiger battalion commander,

Heinz von Westernhagen, just outside Trois Ponts on December 18, 1944: “He told me in this conference that a

‘mix-up’ had happened at Ligneuville and that a rather large number of prisoners had been shot there. He did not

know any details nor who had given the order to do that.” Part of the Tiger battalion had come upon the scene

well after it had taken place, and von Westernhagen had communicated word to Peiper later the next day. RG
